Do We Still Hate
York?
Um....YES! YES
and YES!!!!!!! And I will continue to hate York until he shows that he
can put a Super Bowl contender on the field every year! And even then,
the bitterness runs deep inside me.
An interesting debate seems to be developing. You can see it in our
forum, you feel it when you talk to Niner fans. The Yorks have won a
large PR battle by firing the last management team and hiring this new
crew. Make no mistake about it, I am in full support of Mike Nolan and
his staff. As Niner fans we share one common goal; we want Super Bowl
Championships! So now people are taking sides. Some are optimistic
about the Niners and want to give York the benefit of the doubt. Others
just despise York and all he touches and seem bitter about the air of
optimism creeping in around the Niners chances in the future.
My take is simple: Go Niners, Dump York! I feel optimistic myself. I
like the direction of the draft. I like what Nolan has brought to the
table. I like the feel of the coaching staff. While I do not expect
miracles this first year, I do see hope for improvement and if all were
to work out, maybe there is some competitive football in our near
future. But while I feel optimistic about the chances of the 49ers, I
am always leery of the ownership. Keep in mind, the Yorks have had two
playoff contenders already during their reign of terror. First they
dismantled our two-decade dynasty. Maybe it was time. But after coming
back from the abyss and returning to the playoffs, the Yorks
pulled the rug out from us all again. Bye-bye Mooch, hello #1
overall pick. So while I remain optimistic about our future Niners on
the field, I worry about York off the field.
If Nolan does pull some magic out of his hat, and leads us to the
playoffs in two years, will York find another reason to implode the
team? Will he spend enough money to get quality players and more
importantly pay good players to stay in SF? Nolan was quoted as say it
is okay to be frugal, but not cheap. I say that is a very fine line.
And if Nolan brings success and receives the credit, will York be able
to handle the attention Nolan will get?
So yes, I am optimistic about our Niners. I think we (the Niner
faithful) have forced York to make some necessary changes and I applaud
them. But as the stands fill up again, will York run amuck again? I
fear the answer to that question is also yes. This is why I will be a
DumpYorker until I see that 6th Super Bowl trophy.
