Right direction, but right results?
February is gone and with it goes the worst sports month of the year.
Now the combines have come and gone, free agency has hit, and the
off-season fun can officially begin. Yes, football is a year round
sport and I love it! So as the football juices return, and we start
looking to the draft and the Niner future, it is time to consider the
direction of our fine team.
I do not think anyone can deny that some good things have happened this
off-season. I feel DumpYork has played a role in focusing media
attention and the fans rebellion helped focus the York's attention. And
with that, the ousting of Erickson and Donahue is nothing but great for
the team and the fans. In replacing them, York has apparently turned
the tide of public opinion a bit. York seems off the hook now. He has
brought in a coach that everyone seemingly likes. They have put
together what appears to be a solid coaching staff. The new "GM" while
he has some questions seems like an up and comer. York has even gone
out on the free agent market and made a splash with a solid LT to start
solidifying our OL. All seems rosy in Ninerland these days. Has York
turned the corner? Will he create a Super Bowl contender? Will we all
forget our fledgling website that called for his ouster?
While York has done everything we have asked shy of selling the team. I
am still concerned for the long term health of the club. A quick look
at history brings me to the fear I live in today. Let's see: York took
over a winning club with a winning tradition. We all knew the end was
near so Bill Walsh was brought back in to oversee the transformation of
the club from winners, through salary cap hell, and back to winners
again. Walsh did just that. After two bad years, the Niners and Mooch
were in the playoffs again and things looked good again. But in the
course of the process, York alienated the legend. He pushed Walsh out
the door. Then at the top of our game, a second round loss on the road
to TB, York exploded and fired Mooch. A decision that I stand by what I
said at the time, "It is fine to fire him if you have someone better in
mind, but don't fire him just to fire him." As it turned out the Niners
were clueless and thus started the end of a very short run. York leaned
on Donahue, a true disaster, and in a matter of two years, York
imploded the team and landed us with the #1 pick.
My question now is will the same thing happen? I have no doubt the
Niners will be improved this year. They really can't be worse. With
improvement will come expectations. What happens if Nolan guides the
team towards the playoffs in 2006. By then will there be a stadium deal
in place, and York can be on the cheap again. Can he fire Nolan and
crew in 2007 when maybe they don't go as far we still have a sub 500
team? What happens if Nolan is successful and he wants more money and
power. Will they get in the way of the arrival of Jed, or Paraag?
Bottom line is this. I am happier now than at any time during 2004. The
team is moving in a much better direction. But there are still way too
many questionables out there for me to believe that John York (or Jed)
are our saviors. Because of the organizational structure that has been
created, there are still a lot of problems that will arise sooner or
later and it will all come down to power, money and who John York likes
the best.
My feeling is that John York has done just enough to take the pressure
off himself for the time being. But in two years he will pull the rug
out from us again and leave us at rock bottom. Remember, even Bidwell
and the Cardinals won a playoff game once. I hope this is just the
start of the good things to happen. But I fear this is just a mask to
shield us from the giant cliff ahead.
York, you have done all we have asked, now please sell the team before
you screw it all up again!!!!!!!
