Nolan Good, York Bad
We have our new coach. We have a new face to our great franchise. Mike
Nolan is the man! I am excited about his arrival. But just when I start
to feel the optimism coursing through my veins, I am grounded by the
reminder that the Yorks own the team. It's all talk today -- show me
some action on the field!
After listening to the press conference (on Wednesday 1/19), I am
convinced more than ever the Mike Nolan is a good coach and, if given
the right opportunity, can succeed. I really like how he talked about
developing a scheme around the players we have. That is called
coaching. That is something the Erickson Administration could not
handle -- adapting to what we've got. I really think that Nolan will
put together a good staff and they will get the most out of the talent
we have.
But along with Nolan, we still have the Yorks. Given our current team,
the greatest of coaches might take us from 2 wins to 6, but where do we
go from there? While I felt so good listening to Nolan talk philosophy,
there were also scary reminders as to who the boss really is. Who will
Nolan report to? John York. Who will make the final decisions on
personnel and a GM? As Nolan says, it will be a "we" decision. And what
of the next GM? Nolan will have input into the GM but exactly what role
will the GM play? If it comes to a power struggle with Nolan, who will
have York's ear? There are still so many organizational questions that
are without answers.
The good news is we have a good coach and we can feel positive about
that for today. I give credit to the Yorks for realizing that public
perception matters and for putting together a PR campaign to turn the
tide. Having the press conference at an expensive hotel instead of
headquarters shows they are starting to recognize that. But bottom
line, this organization is still set up for disasster because York is
determined to remain in full control of day to day activiities. Until
York decides to trust his employees and move out of the way, our time
for glowing optimism will be held to mid-week January days while we
wait to watch OTHER teams play in the NFL playoffs.
