No Hope
If this were not so damned painful to watch, I
would think it would be a great comedy.
In 1999 after a great start, Steve Young went down on a play that would
end his career. Jeff Garcia took over and a 3-1 record turned into a
4-12 finish. I must say that by mid-season I started rooting for
losses. Was I turning my back on my beloved Niners? Of course not! I
sensed a level of mediocrity after 20 years on top of the game. It was
time for us to take our medicine for a year or rebuild and kick
some butt! 8-8 meant nothing to me, so I started hoping for the losses.
And we lost. At the time we had a man named Bill Walsh in charge of our
draft. He took the #3 pick, traded down and got some LB you may have
heard of: Julian Peterson. He also added Ahmed Plummer later in the
first round. John Englberger, Jason Webster, Jeff Ulbrich, and yes in
the 7th round Tim Rattay were also in that draft. Not a bad start. The
point is we had a leader. We had a direction. It was okay to lose
because we could have faith that it was short term loss for long term
gain!
Fast forward to today. Our beloved Niners are unwatchable. Being bad is
one thing. But we are bad AND boring -- a horrid combination. But
unlike in 1999 and 2000 there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
Nobody in this current administration has proven that they have a plan
to get us back to the place we belong -- THE SUPER BOWL! Instead, we
hear that we will be out of Cap Hell in 2006. What does that mean?
We'll be able to spend a few extra dollars for overated players?
This (non)organization has no clue. And it starts with John York.
Watching the greatness of the 49ers collapse around him, he gives his
GM a 4-year extension. A GM with no track record of success at this
point. A GM who has shown obvious weakness in evaluating talent. A GM
that hired a Pac-10 buddy with a 500 career record to replace a coach
who took us back to the playoffs. The coach has put together a staff
that has shown no ability to develop talent. Not a single player on
this team seems to be improving. Instead, the Barlows, Lloyds, Kwames,
Rattays and others are regressing under the leadership of this coaching
staff. Was the talent evaluation that bad or has the coaching staff
ruined good talent? BOTH!
So as this train wreck creeps toward the end of the season, the owners
of the 49ers are nowhere to be seen. They allegedly attend every game,
but sit in the owners box out of view of the cameras. They live with
the excuse of being in Cap Hell, while they count the money they save
from being in Cap Hell.
And that leaves us, the fans, with no reason to cheer for a win or
cheer for a loss. There seems to be no hope in either. Come Sunday we
will sit and watch not just a bad team, but a boring team, and it will
be painful.
