Passion
I heard former 49er great Brent Jones on the radio the other day. He
was talking about his passion for football -- how he loves being a part
of Sundays. Whether it was playing or broadcasting, he loves
football. He talked about his desire to be a team owner along with good
friend Steve Young. And he talked about the passion they would both
bring to an organization.
That made my heart drop because alas it will not be the 49er
organization!
I have passion for football. I devote 17 Sundays every year to the NFL
(not including playoffs and of course the greatness of the NFL draft).
My friends are equally as passionate. I see the passion the players
have (sometimes even too much). But where is the passion from our
leadership?
Does Dennis Erickson ever raise his voice? Does Terry Donahue spend 8
hours in a day working at headquarters evaluating talent for the
future? Does Dr. York care enough to even show up for the games?
I see no passion to win from this organization. Seriously, does York
attend any games? You certainly don't see him on TV in the owners box.
Does he care about the outcome of a game? The greatness that was Eddie
D was that he cared. He did not always make the right decisions, but we
knew that all those decisions were made out of his passion for the game
and his desire to be the best.
I hate Jerry Jones, and many of his decisions are very questionable,
but you know he makes them with a passion to lead the Cowgirls to
victory. Same with Alice in Oakland. I want an ownership group that is
going to have a passion for the game. They will not always make the
right decisions. Mistakes will happen. We'll second guess them forever.
That is part of being a sports fan.
But at the end of the day I am going to know that my passion for wins
and their passion for wins are the same, and the only thing that
separates us is a couple billion dollars!
